Sutton Veny - St John the Evangelist on Flickr.

Visitors to the area south of Warminster can hardly miss Sutton Veny as the replacement church can be seen for miles around, thanks to its superb central tower and spire. The church was built in 1866-68, and the architect was J.L.Pearson.
To the west and north of the nave are a large collection of War Graves; nearly every one I saw here was Australian, and killed in the first World War.

I came with confidence to re-photo this church and found it locked for the first time ever. Crazy as there is really nothing of any importance inside, apart from an ornate organ at the west end and some good Victorian glass. A large number of autumnal leaves gathered in the porch and I wondered if I was sniffing redundancy in the offing. The churchyard however impeccably maintained and the setting delightful.
